Over the years I have constantly wrestled with my approach to photographing giraffes – they are difficult subjects, partly because of their size, and partly because of their nervousness.
My portfolio has a skew towards tighter, more intimate portraits and whilst I love that approach, it can be tricky to also provide a sense of place and size.
I thought it was time I played on my love of pattern and symmetry again with the giraffe and, as always, my imagination was full of potential compositions.
When I finally found myself in the company of a tower of giraffe I had two compositions in mind, and couldn’t believe my eyes when this trio offered the chance to turn one of those into a photograph.
I was lucky to be blessed with some good light that day, and some cooperative giraffes.
