I’ve grown massively as a photographer, and as a human being since I began taking photographs five years ago and thus, naturally, the results have changed too.

Many will remember my flamingo project from 2016; I recently revisited the archives of this project prior to undertaking an assignment last month with these beautiful birds.

Two years has now passed since the original project and it appears my creative courage, technical fluency and emotional investment have all grown.

The results of this years shoot are, in my opinion, much more powerful. They allow the subject space to breath, and the viewer an increased ability to emotionally invest themselves in both the image and the subject.

Yesterday was #PenguinAwarenessDay so I thought I’d share a new photograph in celebration. I have developed a soft spot for these wonderful little birds since I began trying to photograph them.

The Otter II

Price range: £250.00 through £1,150.00

2021

It has been an interesting year, and certainly, one of the highlights for me has been working with some more varied species.

Two of those species are the meerkat, and the otter, both of which have proven to be such interesting subjects. It’s been a great challenge capturing a single frame of both species that does them justice and shows their personalities.

In July I shared the result of my time spent with the meerkat, and today, in November, I am delighted to share the result of my time with the otter.

I think the photograph works – there is personality in his face, and his damp fur hints at the otter’s love of swimming. My autism also draws me to the beautiful patterns created by the damp fur.

Looking forward to delving into the worlds of some more lesser-photographed species in 2022.

It’s #WorldWildlifeDay and I wanted to mark the occasion by sharing this new photograph from a few weeks ago.⁣

White rhinos have been a major success story for conservation, having been brought back from the edge of extinction by global efforts, with populations rising to around 20,000 individuals.

Unfortunately unprecedented levels of poaching in recent years has resulted in record numbers of white rhino being slaughtered for their ivory.

⁣The above facts are both alarming and reassuring — a sign that we must work harder, but also proof that we can turn these declines around.

Kalahari King

It has been such a great experience to photograph these lively and energetic creatures, but also a great challenge — they move around a lot and trying to create portraits that capture their personalities can be tricky.

I have spoken before about wanting to create a portrait that features their instantly-recognisable faces and I think I may finally have created that.

I sensed that the portrait would be stronger if I waited until he posed in front of a shaded backdrop — that would allow for a darker background, and thus he would stand-out. The challenge then is to get the meerkat himself in the light.

I got there in the end, and his personality is at the very heart of the photograph, which is always my aim.

A meerkat portrait from earlier in the year. I love this photograph because initially, it comes across as a visually simplistic frame, but when you look into the face of this dominant male it quickly becomes much more complex.

Timon

Price range: £250.00 through £1,150.00

2021

This is the first time that I have ever released a photograph of a meerkat, and that is because it’s the first time I’ve managed to capture a strong enough portrait with the eye pin-sharp. I have tried many times before, but they move so quickly, and their eyes are so small – it is a challenge to nail the photograph sharpness-wise, and without sharpness there is simply no photograph.

I am pleased with this frame, there is soul in his face, and the termite mound provides a much needed sense of place; the termite mounds play an important role in the life of the meerkat — they provide a lookout post, and, perhaps most importantly, food.

When it came to titling the work, there was one obvious choice – Timon, after Disney’s Lion King character.

This encounter with a baby White Rhinoceros in January was an early highlight, but easily one of my all time favourite shoots of the year.

My aim was to capture her cheeky personality, and I think that shines through in this frame – she rarely stood still.
