It has been sometime since I last released a photograph of a lioness – it is easy to be drawn-in by the majesty of the adult male and the mane, but there is a delicate beauty in the face of a lioness and I wanted to capture that in my latest portrait.
We found an ideal, simplistic backdrop and then we just had to wait patiently for the lioness to rise from her slumber and hope that the opportunity to capture the portrait I had mind would present itself.
It was worth the wait because when she rose, she stared into the sky and her eyes spoke a thousand words – I couldn’t have dreamt of a better result.

I recently spent some time working on a special collaboration with @oxleybob to raise important funds for @thebigcatsanctuaryuk and our subject was their resident white tiger. When we departed the Sanctuary, I knew I had to work with a white tiger again – they are so enchanting.
On the train home I began to dream of photographing a white tiger again, and decided that the aim should be to create a portrait — it should be all about their unique beauty (they lack pheomelanin; the pigment that turns fur orange) and their should be no distractions.
I finally got myself and my cameras in front of this beautiful creature a few months after initially setting eyes in a white tiger, and knew immediately that I had to be at eye level – he was laying in some tall grass, and that would provide a beautifully simple background upon which I could justice to this most beautiful creature.

Inside the mouth of a lion who was, at the time, a little agitated! Lions have thirty adult teeth, consisting of twelve incisors, four canines, ten premolars and four molars which are all used to consume their prey. Adult teeth start to show at around three months old and continue growing until they are over a year old.

If there was a beauty contest for lions then this young male would walk away with the crown every time. He is easily the most handsome lion I have ever encountered, and he knew it, you could see it in his eyes.

Eye Of The Tiger

In 2016 I captured a photograph of a lions eye, titled ‘Her Eye’, and ever since that day I have been trying to create a similar frame of a tigers eye.
Seven years later, in September 2021, I finally managed to turn that dream into this photograph. It is an intense frame, and I think the colour of her stripes adds to the power and majesty of it.
It is one of those works that leaves room for interpretation, and that is what I am always searching for — photographs that trigger emotions, that force people to think.
I’ve experienced so many magical moments over the last eight years, but I will certainly never forget the moment I saw this photograph on the back of my #Z7II. The camera has captured so much detail.

It’s always a challenge when working in the field, I am my own worst critic and there is self-imposed pressure to succeed.
I am an artist, not a National geographic photographer therefore I am looking for a degree of abstraction and interpretation rather than simply ‘recording’ what lays in front of me.
It is tough, but with patience and having learnt to impose oneself on a situation rather than letting the situation impose itself on me, anything is possible.
My metadata shows that this image was taken after 2hrs 17mins with these beautiful creatures. A split second of magic turned a mental image into a psychical image, but had I not imposed myself and employed my determination we would have gone home empty handed.
