I have worked with the tiger on many occasions but I still feel extremely lucky when I spend time in their presence. At the forefront of my mind is the sobering thought that these cats could be gone within our life-time.
I wanted an image that did this stunning animal justice, and I had not yet achieved this. A successful portrait should tell the story of its subject — in this case the prowess of the tiger — but the conundrum was how to capture their powerful, trade-mark hunting behaviour in a singular and visually strong image.
After many hours spent with this species, and several failed attempts, I think we may finally have that image.
The Future

‘The Future’ is now one of my favourite tiger photographs – the light just fell perfectly, and he looks so majestic. He is the future of his species.

A moment of magic photographed last week. I’ve spent many hours in the field cutting a frustrated figure and leaving the field with nothing that matches my definition of ‘good’.
A storm was due this week and I knew that if I put in the hours and employed the heart I would stand a chance of leaving with some powerful content. I observed the sky as it covered with clouds for about an hour, then this mother and calf moved into position and finally got the image.
I put in the hours that day and invested a considerable amount of heart and soul. The negatives of life provide the emotional energy to invest in imagery. What an image.

The giraffe often reminds me of Roald Dahl’s legendary Big Friendly Giant character — they are somewhat otherworldly, yet delightfully friendly. ⠀
They are arguably one of Africa’s most loved species and thus I had to think of a unique way to photograph them. I wanted to capture their personality and there is no better way to do that than by capturing an eye-level portrait — not an easy feat when the giraffes eyes are between 4.6 and 6.1 m off the ground. ⠀
The only logical way to capture the image was from an elevated platform, and earlier in May we finally nailed it. What a beautiful giant.⠀

Love Is…

Emotion is key to my style of photography and I enjoy capturing portraiture that captures the emotional bond between animals – it is so often overlooked, but when you pay attention, love is everywhere.
It was heartwarming to witness the strong bond these two reticulated giraffes had, and the clear sky that day provided the best canvas on which to present the moment.
Head In The Clouds

Over the course of my time as a photographer I have been reminded time and time again that simplicity can make for the most powerful photographs, and thus simplicity has become a cornerstone of my approach. I think animals and simplicity go hand-in-hand — their beauty speaks for itself.
I’ve always loved giraffes, and that love has undoubtedly stemmed from a childhood experience — I saw a baby giraffe born when I was young and watched it grow from 6ft to 16ft.
I’ve been working for many months to get a photograph like this, a giraffe looking regal against the simplistic beauty of the sky, but being at roughly the same height as a giraffes face with a camera in hand has not been easy.
I love the resulting photograph – the more I look at it the more at peace I feel.
Guardian

This special moment in time, titled ‘Guardian’, pays homage to those with the most important job in the world – our mothers.
Like many of my photographs, this was inspired by my own experiences and in this case, the great admiration and respect I have for my own mother. I am aware that I wouldn’t be where I am today without her love and strength, and this frame is very much an ode to her.
The initial idea was sketched out in 2019, and the photograph was finally captured in April 2021 using the new #Z7II. I hope you connect to it in the same special way that i do.
