When I saw this image for the first time I knew there could only be one title, but I couldn’t put the image into words and thus its release was delayed.
As the great Elliott Erwitt said “The whole point of taking pictures is so that you don’t have to explain things with words.” His words resonate strongly with me regarding this beautiful moment in time.
Two Halves

Giraffe are notoriously tricky to photograph due to their odd size and shape — you either have to be far away or very close, and they are spooked easily. They test your resolve and patience more than any other creature, and push your imagination up a gear.
I thrive in the field when I’m working under self imposed pressure; I am my biggest critic and I knew I could do better when it came to giraffes. I went into this shoot with the pressure and imagination cranked up a hear, and I think it paid off.
Sometimes less is more, and this new giraffe image proves that — it is probably my strongest photograph of the species, and definitely my favourite.
Reach For The Stars

My work is all about telling stories, it is my outlet for thoughts and emotions, and I certainly have plenty of both following the recent lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.
When telling stories, two things are key — the background, and the subject.
I have always enjoyed and tried to take advantage of any sunlight shining through the tress, it provides a bokeh filled, dream-like background on which to tell stories.
The subject is perhaps the hardest ingredient to get right, a giraffe will do what it wants, when it wants… the only way to get the image I wanted was to wait, and wait. Waiting is made worth it when you get moments like this — it is a powerful and emotionally charged moment in time.
I think the title suits the image — we must not allow the current climate to dull our dreams, we must always reach for the stars.

The Light & The Dark

Light is essential to good photography – it can make or break an image. Something I’ve learnt over the years is that while light is essential, it can still be a photographers foe as well as friend. Shoot at the wrong time of the day and the light will indeed work against you; mid-day light is incredibly harsh and this is mostly avoided. This image was shot one morning early last year – the light was clean and crisp, complementing the beautiful pattern of the zebra to great effect. Although I’ve many Zebra works, this image from 2015 still remains one of my favourites.

Mirror, Mirror

Prior to this shoot I hadn’t managed to spend time photographing the zebra for several months, and I missed their company.
I am naturally drawn to their stripes and monochromatic coats. It was a great feeling to secure a strong zebra photograph recently – I love the compositional symmetry, it matches the order and patterns of the subjects.
It’s a perfect example of the magic that can be created when patterns are paired with beautiful light.
Nature’s Piano

At first, this photograph, titled ‘Natures Piano’ seems ridiculously simple, but the photograph actually has many layers. We live our lives in colour, but sometimes being removed from literal reality can be an enlightening experience.
There could be a thousand stories in this single image — it is up to the viewer to employ their imagination, invest their emotion and remember that it’s not about what you see, but about how you see it.

Behind Stripes

I enjoy playing with the dazzling patterns of the zebra, however for the image to have any lasting impact it must have a strong composition.
My preferred zebra species is always the grevys, they poses the most visually arresting stripes and provide many photographic options.⠀
