The Queen Of The South
£250.00 – £1,150.00Price range: £250.00 through £1,150.002021
The rhino has always fascinated me – they are such gigantic, prehistoric creatures, but underneath this they are intelligent and mostly gentle.
I’ve worked with white rhino several times before, but I have always been interested in working with the critically endangered black rhino, and this portrait is the result of that desire.
Nikon’s Z7II handled the contrasting light perfectly.
Little Miracle
£250.00 – £1,150.00Price range: £250.00 through £1,150.002022
It was a real pleasure to kick 2022 off by spending an hour photographing this baby Southern White Rhinoceros.
Prior to the shoot I knew I wanted a portrait that captured the personality of this young lady, but one that also communicated the massive size difference between mother and calf.
I also knew that a full body portrait wouldn’t work — it would be too loose and the emotional impact of her face would be lost amongst the messy backdrop.
Therefore, the position of her mother would be crucial to the frame. You cannot move an adult rhino into position, the only option is to be patient, and finally things came together — the placement of mums leg in the right of the frame is perfect — it highlights the massive size difference, and the fragility of the calf.
I couldn’t have asked for a better start to a new year of photography. I have to admit to feeling quite emotional when I stare at this frame — what a little miracle she is.
Zawadi
£250.00 – £1,150.00Price range: £250.00 through £1,150.002022
When I’m photographing an animal I always invest time in getting to know their character and the aim of my work is to always highlight that personality in the final shot.
After watching Zawadi for a while it was clear just how sassy and cheeky she was; she was constantly running around, annoying her mother or sticking her tongue out.
I think the final portrait oozes personality and that is always my goal. She is indeed a gift, as her name suggests in Swahili.
The Clash
£250.00 – £1,150.00Price range: £250.00 through £1,150.002022
This was one of the most exhilarating moments of my career to date, my heart was thumping at 100mph and my hands where shaking. I had one chance to get an image and in the midst of an adrenaline rush this was far from straight forward.
Once the adrenaline had passed and I had a chance to review the image I knew I had captured the power and majesty of the white rhino. A very unique species and a moment I will remember forever.
Fierce Gaze
£250.00 – £1,150.00Price range: £250.00 through £1,150.002022
The dhole is a creature that has fascinated me for much of my life, and that fascination manifested itself in a strong desire to have them in front of my camera lens.
Endless Gaze
£250.00 – £1,150.00Price range: £250.00 through £1,150.002022
The dhole is a creature that has fascinated me for much of my life, and that fascination manifested itself in a strong desire to have them in front of my camera lens.
As I learnt during this shoot, their pack instincts are amongst some of the strongest I have ever witnessed – they are always alert, and they always have each others back. It is quite remarkable to watch them in action.
I loved the long, wispy grass that carpeted the ground around the pack, and I knew it would add a beautiful texture to the picture I wanted. When an individual took a brief rest amongst the grass I knew I had my chance.
It was always going to be released in colour – to remove that beautiful orange coat would be a crime.
The Day Is Long
£250.00 – £1,150.00Price range: £250.00 through £1,150.002022
My love for the Sri Lankan Leopard seems to have developed into another autistic obsession recently — I am continually developing new compositions and ideas featuring these beautiful cats.
This composition was inspired by a photograph I captured a few years ago titled ‘Pearly Whites’ — I loved the energy in that frame, and I wanted to convey that again in this photograph.
It’s different to most of my leopard work in that it doesn’t show his eyes, but I think it tells a story, and that’s always the overarching aim with my work.
The Descent
£250.00 – £1,150.00Price range: £250.00 through £1,150.002017
An adult leopard photographed beginning to descend a fallen tree trunk. Trees are the leopards playground and they can often be seen stashing prey reserves high up in their branches then returning to them later – this individual had used its high position to look out over the surrounding territory for threats.
Through The Foliage
£250.00 – £1,150.00Price range: £250.00 through £1,150.002019
